This oar was made as a prop for my final project in the Special Effects program at Sheridan College. The full project was a whole werewolf creature suit, complete with wardrobe, full muscle suit, animatronic head, and a prop.
My main portion of the project was the complete design, building, and painting of the oar.
Full Team: Jude Theriault, Ava Guse, Sean Beer, Gen Kale, Maddy Muszka
It all started out with a concept. Our idea for this project was to take the traditional 80's slasher movie genre and design a werewolf creature that could fit as the killer. Our main inspiration was from 'Friday the 13th' and 'Sleepaway Camp'. We wanted our werewolf to be a camp counsellor who got turned into a werewolf during camp and went out on a murderous rampage.
Now since our werewolf actor was going to be wearing stilts we wanted to give them a support, this is where my oar comes in. I tried to think of a way that a werewolf would pick something up and possibly use it as a weapon, and for that thing to not only make sense in the world, but also in the design.
This is where the oar came in. A regular werewolf might not think to pick up any old oar, but a camp counsellor might be near the lake when he transforms and picks up the old oar left lying around to defend himself (or just attack in a murderous rage).
